You’ve Been Great
Original Music and Lyrics by Richard I Lionheart King of England (a.d. 1194) – Adaptation and arrangements by The Afterglow (2008) – rough mix version (© Doublemind Records, 2008).
Richard I Lionheart, King of England, while getting back home from the Third Crusade, is held to prison by the men of Leopold V of Babenberg, Duke of Austria and Stiria, because of an old rift.
His sad imprisonment in Durnstein’s stronghold lasts more than two years, during which the king feels lonely, abandoned and betrayed by his many friends, who are late paying the ransom for his liberation.
From the pain and melancholy generated by their behaviour comes, in a.d. 1194, this song written in medieval French, the tongue of the king, which has been passed on for almost a thousand years by trobadours first and common people later.
The Afterglow found it, loved it, changed it a bit, arranged it, translated in English, in their rock mood. Trying to give back to listeners the emotions the valiant king passed through, in that dark wet fortress, a long long time ago.
